Listen to the story!

Adrienne Laurencelle, a junior at Monroe Catholic School in Fairbanks, is helping to save lives in Africa. Adrienne learned about the Red Cross' effort to eliminate the measles in Africa by 2005, and wanted to help the Red Cross reach that goal. Adrienne collaborated with a group of friends who helped her cut out blue and gold paper angels. She decided to make the angels blue and gold because those are her school colors, and they made 12 hundred, which represents the number of kids that die each day in Africa, from the measles.

Adrienne sold the angels during lunchtime at her school, sporting events and holiday gatherings, for one dollar each. Not only did she sell all 12 hundred angels, Adrienne raised additional money through community donations. In the end, the total amount donated to the Red Cross' Measles Initiative was $1,700.

Adrienne originally thought that the best part of her fundraiser would be sending off all the money to the Red Cross, however, she says that one of the best parts was seeing the younger kids get involved. She saw kindergartners donate five dollars, and then be excited that they just saved five lives. Adrienne says that she is grateful for everyone who contributed.
