NYRTP to Portland

On April 19th, five ATMI reporters packed up and left the chilly state of Alaska and flew south to enjoy a weekend in warm, sunny Portland at the National Youth in Radio Training Project Conference.

Rebecca Barker, Chris Frenier, Hannah Magen, Noah Magen and Sara Perman, along with Program Director Shana Sheehy and Assistant Director Rosey Robards, got a chance to mingle with other youth radio programs from across the country. They learned all about radio for youth.

"I still keep in contact with the kids I met," Sara Perman said. "We get a chance to share our radio stories with each other on the internet all the time."

The trip was four days long, from April 19-23.  Each student was able to participate in workshops concerning radio, and then a daylong intensives focusing on one particular aspect of radio, such as computer music making, talk show radio, or creating radio dramas.

"Reasoning with Reason, the computer music making program, was really fun," said Noah Magen. "Our show will be so much better now because I can add more good music to it."

In their free time in Portland the ATMI team was able to venture to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), a lacrosse game, a Christian rave, the malls, Powell's Book Store, as well as play in the park and eat lots of ice cream at all the local Ben and Jerry's.

When the ATMI crew left Portland they left with lots of new radio experience as well as new friends from around the country.   They are especially thankful to friends and family who helped them meet costs for the trip, and are already excited about next year's conference.

SPECIAL THANKS TO: Alaska Broadcastors Association, J.R. Zufelt, The Perman Family and everyone who donated to or purchased items at our ATMI Garage Sale.
