Walking through the typical high school hallway, one can find lots and lots of cute guys wearing jeans. There’s always the Abercrombies, the Levis and good old Carharts, but what about those two or three guys in the corner sporting their sister’s, girlfriend’s or even their very own pair of girl pants? But what are these so-called girl pants, why would a guy want to wear them, and most importantly, why should we care?
Girl Pants, as defined by the Urban Dictionary of Slang, are “very tight Abercrombie-like pants worn by guys who are Hardcore/Emo.” Basically, these are pants that are made for girls, and are typically worn by guys who like to listen to emotional, or hardcore rock music, however, the style is not only limited to musicians. Everyone from skaters, to self-proclaimed metrosexuals have been seen wearing those tight, flare jeans that fashionistas all over the nation have come to know and love.
In Anchorage, most of the girlpants wearing guys are in on the music scene. “That’s the reason I was introduced to them in the first place, is because of the music I listen to,” said Chase Agee, the bassist for the band Ex’s for Eyes.
Across the nation, it seems that music and girl pants go hand in hand. Alternative bands such as Fall Out Boy can be seen wearing the pants to almost every show, and a quick glance at online music sites shows that girl pants is indeed a “in” topic. So “in” in fact, that it has been labeled as part of a growing trend called fashioncore. This fashioncore label is given to an outfit that basically consists of a tight t-shirt or hooded sweatshirt denim girl pants, and a pair of Converse shoes, also known as “Chucks.” Stores, such as Hot Topic, have even picked up on this trend, marketing a line of “fitted jeans” for men. But most guys know that they can save the fifty dollars and just call up their favorite sister or girlfriend for a pair of totally trendy girl pants.
However, guys aren’t exactly known for seeing something in a magazine, and rushing out and buyng it, especially something that is as intimidating and tight as girl pants. So what is it that keeps guys wanting to wear the pants day after day?
“(The pants are) way more comfortable than guys pants,” said Service High student Alan Massey. Agee agrees.
But comfort? Indeed, it is possible that these guys are in denial, but the world might as well face it now. Guys are shaped much differently than girls! First of all, women have much wider hips than men, and the pants are cut to accommodate this. As a result, the same teen-aged guy can wear anywhere from a 0 to a 7, depending on exactly how tight he wants the pants to be. In addition to not having hips, most guys also don’t have a full bottom. Where girlpants are cut to fit a rounder rear, guys just end up with a bunch of loose cloth on their butt. Another major difference is that most girl pants don’t exactly give guys much room to breathe. Mike Onarato, a student at Service High said there are some things he’d like to change about girl pants, mainly more crotch.
Men’s underwear also takes up more room, especially since tightie whities don’t appear to be an option. Chase Agee states his preference quite clearly, “Boxers.”
Now, it’s obvious that guys don’t mind the fit, but what about the girls, who are expected to look at, drool over and even date, these girl pants wearing guys? Well, most don’t seem to mind. After all, most girls would rather date a guy that wears girl pants, as opposed to, say, girl’s shoes.
“I think if they’re on the right guy, they can look hot, but, if you don’t have the figure for them, don’t wear ‘em,” said Service freshman Elizabeth Raines about guys looking for girl pants. Raines defines the right figure as, “Well, obviously he’s gotta be thin, but I don’t know, if they have a nice ass.”
Despite all of the anatomical differences between men and women, Raines isn’t alone in saying some guys are capable of looking really good, in girl pants.
“Oh yeah, if they looked hot, I would date a guy who wore girl pants,” said one student.
Then what is it that makes guys want to wear girl pants, makes girls actually like it, and makes girl pants worthy of 5 minutes of your time?
“They’re more comfortable than guys pants, and they look hot,” Onarato said.
