FAQ

What are the benefits of becoming a club?
ATMI will provide you support on many of the projects you work on. Our staff is available for some technical advice and we would be happy to share our creative expertise! You will be part of a larger group of teen media producers across Alaska! Opportunities to collaborate with other teens will arise often. We will help you get your work noticed across the state, nationally and internationally. Some groups who do not already have adequate equipment will also receive equipment to use for projects.
How do we start a club?
Getting started is pretty simple. We just need you to fill out an application! And with the application, submit a two-minute maximum piece about why you would like to start a club and the work you plan to do! You can use the submit tool or e-mail your application to clubs@alaskateenmedia.org.
Does my club have to be school based?
Not at all! An ATMI club can meet at school or be school based but it doesn’t have to be.
Do we need an adult to start a club?
Yes. We believe having a dedicated adult who believes in what you are doing is only going to help you accomplish your club goals. This adult could be a teacher, an employee of the local newspaper, radio station, or a community member with some experience in producing media. Pick someone you can trust! The ideal advisor would be an adult you can count on but who will step away when necessary and let you do your work.
We can’t find an advisor. What should we do?
Please contact ATMI Director Rosey Robards at rosey@alaskateenmedia.org and she will help you find a solution.
How often do we need to host meetings?
Decide what works best for you. Perhaps there is a day of the week you could all meet in a computer lab or perhaps you’d rather work independently most of the time. But have a monthly gathering to touch base with each other. It’s really up to you. Whatever you feel it takes to accomplish your goals and fulfill the club requirements.
What are the club requirements?
Each month your club will be responsible for contributing to the ATMI Web site and radio show. This means you need to submit at least one piece of work a month. ATMI directors will e-mail monthly prompts to inspire you but ultimately we would like you to “mine your life” for ideas and topics that interest you.
ATMI directors are available for consultation over the phone and projects should appeal to people in your hometown but also have a broad international audience in mind.
Can we work on more than one project per month?
Sure! We will not limit your creativity! If you have a strong Club that can accomplish more than the minimum requirements, we are all for it! Perhaps your club could have it’s own news articles and/or TV or radio show!
What kind of projects should we be working on?
This is all about your voice! What kinds of things are you wondering about? Who in your community is interesting? What do you think the world should know about you and where you live? What are some things your community needs more information on? What stories need to be told? Think about these things and the stories will find you!
We are always looking for work that might be aired on our “In Other News” radio show. And if you design your radio stories to appeal to a national audience we will help you share them with radio stations across the country.
How do we submit our work?
Use the submit form or e-mail your work to clubs@alaskateenmedia.org. We also have an FTP that can be used if you’re sending really large files! Just e-mail clubs@alaskateenmedia.org for more info.
